Even the basic units of life also have specific chirality. Amino acids in organisms are all left-handed and sugar molecules are right-handed.
For a long time, chemists have been using chiral phenomena to construct chiral structures at different scales and give them unique biological and catalytic properties. Circular structures also exist widely in nature. For example, DNA molecules can be entangled to form uniform circular structures.
At the molecular level, there are structures with both ring and chirality, such as cycloalkanes with chiral carbon, which show the conformational characteristics of ship or chair; in topology, Mobius ring with peculiar properties is also a structure with both ring and chiral characteristics.
However, as far as we know, multi-level structures with both ring and chiral properties have not been reported at the nanoscale.
Recently, Professor Lin Jiaping from the school of materials, East China University of science and technology has made new discoveries in the preparation of chiral ring nanostructures.
It was found that poly (γ – benzyl-l-glutamic acid ester) (PBLG) homopolymer and poly (γ – benzyl-l-glutamic acid ester) – block polyethylene glycol (pblg-b-peg) binary system self-assembled in solution to form uniform and chiral controllable helical ring multilevel nanostructures.
By adjusting the blending ratio of block copolymer and homopolymer, it was found that the ring structure was formed by homopolymer assembly.
Further studies show that the formation of the chiral ring is a continuous two-step self-assembly process: first, the polypeptide homopolymer self-assembled to form a uniform ring structure, and then the block copolymer self-assembled on the homopolymer ring to form a surface nanostructure with chiral helix.
It should be noted that the helices on the surface of chiral rings formed by self-assembly of pblg-b-peg / PBLG system are all dextral (Fig. a). When pbdg-b-peg with opposite chiral polypeptide block is used for self-assembly, chiral ring can also be obtained, but the surface threads are all left-handed (Fig. b); if pbdg-b-peg and pblg-b-peg block copolymers are blended with PBLG homopolymer for self-assembly, the chiral ring assembly with bead like surface can be obtained (Fig. C).
It is the first time to report the construction of chiral ring-shaped multistage structures at nanoscale, which further deepens the understanding of surface restricted self-assembly and chirality regulation, and provides reference for the construction of various complex multi-level nanostructures.
